The Commission Process

Note: The process outlined below is applicable to lockets and miniatures only. For my general drawing and painting commission process, visit this page. For my digital collage commission process, click here.

Understanding my commission process makes the experience more pleasant and productive for all parties. This process has three stages, each of which are marked by changes in the role of the client (you) and the artist (me).

Stage One

This stage is all about planning. After you send me an inquiry, I'll reach out to you with a quote or, if necessary, a request for more information. We'll talk about details like color palette and expected timeline. Once all of that is solidified, I'll send you a contract to sign, and you'll send the contract back to me along with the deposit. If you're sending in your own locket or frame, this is the point at which you'll do so.

Stage Two

Next, you will send me as many photos as possible for reference. (For more information on reference materials, visit this page.) I'll let you know which photo(s) work best. Once I have your approval, I'll get to work on your miniature. I'll reach out to you know once I think the painting is done.

Outcome:

A painting of the head of a hairless cat. The background is black.

Stage Three

Before I seal the painting behind a protective glass or plexiglass cover, you'll have a chance to approve the piece or request changes. Easy revisions (refining the likeness, changing the background color) are free, but anything that takes over an hour (such as starting the painting over) will be subject to a $55/hour fee. When you're satisfied with the work, I'll set it into the locket or frame and send it your way. The remaining balance is due before I ship the artwork.

Outcome:

Two paintings, each of a hairless cat, set into a miniature frame.

Congratulations! You're now the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind work of art. I love to see my art in its new home, so once you hang or wear your commissioned piece, please send me a photo or two.
